DENVER — The Ruby Hill Rail Yard, a ski and snowboard terrain park in Denver, has opened for the 2020 season.

In its 14th season, the Ruby Hill Rail Yard features 10 rails and boxes of various sizes and configurations, including some that are new this year, according to Denver Parks and Recreation. All the designs and rails were provided by Winter Park. The rail yard was created in 2007 by Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park as a way to bring skiing and snowboarding to an urban setting. Each season, more than 25 volunteers work to prepare the rail yard for the public, Denver Parks and Recreation said.

The Ruby Hill Rail Yard is located off S. Platte River Drive and W. Florida Avenue.

The recent snowfall delivered conditions ideal for snowmaking at the park. TechnoAlpin, the company that makes the snow, provided snow guns and technical assistance.

“We are grateful for Winter Park Resort’s partnership that allows us to offer this unique recreation opportunity in Denver,” said Happy Haynes, executive director of Denver Parks and Recreation. “This program increases access to Colorado’s iconic snow sports while encouraging residents to stay active outside during the winter.”

Denver Parks and Recreation said the yard is free to the public and open every day during normal park hours, which is 5 a.m. through 11 p.m. It is lit from dusk until 9 p.m.

The rail yard, weather permitting, will be open through March.
