RTD rate hike set for a final vote

DENVER -- RTD fares could go up across the board depending on the outcome of a vote that's set for Tuesday. The increase in bus and light rail fares would help provide a 40% discount to low income riders.

The price of a ticket to the airport is set to go up by $1.50 and would be $10.50. Local fares would bump up to $3 and regional fares would cost $5.25.

After amonths-long public comment period, RTD’s financial administration and audit committee approved the plan but it must be be passed by the full board meeting for the increase to take effect. The meeting is set for September 18 at the RTD administrative office.

Under the low income program, riders would be able to qualify for a 40% discount if they are at 185% of the federal poverty level, meaning a family of three would be making approximately $40,000 per year.

"Our hope is that we’re able to alleviate some of the burdens of the cost of transportation for these individuals that don’t have many other options that are as affordable as RTD and still need a break," said Michael Washington, RTD Transit Equity Manager.

Here are some of the changes that would take effect next year if the increase is approved:

  • Increase the discount offered to riders between 6 and 19 years old to 70 percent.
  • Introduce a 3-hour pass, which would replace a 3-hour one-way transfer.
