BOULDER, Colo. — Multiple agencies are investigating after a road rage incident led to a carjacking in Broomfield that ended in Boulder officers firing at the armed man before taking him into custody without injury.
The road rage incident and carjacking near the intersection of U.S. 36 and Highway 121 happened just after 6 a.m., according to the Broomfield Police Department. The initial report suggested two people were involved in road rage in the area, and when they stopped near the intersection, at least one of the people took out a gun and stole a truck from a bystander.
Broomfield police sent out a Be On The Lookout alert to nearby agencies.
Just after 7 a.m., someone reported a person in a white pickup was driving erratically and hitting property on Pearl Street, according to the Boulder Police Department. BPD officers, police with the University of Colorado Police Department and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded to the area and spotted the car, said Dionne Waugh, BPD public information officer.
Officers deployed stop sticks, which deflated the tires, but the suspect vehicle continued driving on its rims, according to the Boulder Police Department.
The suspect drove down Table Mesa toward the U.S. 36 east ramp and then onto the sidewalk headed toward the RTD bus stop, Boulder police said. At that time, Boulder police said the suspect brandished a gun at officers, and officers fired at him. No officers were injured.
Boulder police officers used vehicle maneuvers to stop the vehicle and took the suspect into custody, the department said. No one was hurt in the incident.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Trenton Joshua Dunham. Authorities believe he was also involved in a series of incidents in Greeley overnight, including allegedly breaking into a vehicle, stealing a firearm and a car, and shooting into a car and a house, according to Boulder police. No one was injured or killed.
According to Boulder police, Dunham has been charged with:
- Two felony counts of aggravated motor vehicle theft
- One felony count of illegally discharging a firearm
- One misdemeanor count of first-degree criminal trespass
- One misdemeanor count of theft
- One felony count of aggravated robbery
- Three felony counts of menacing
- One felony count of criminal second degree assault with a deadly weapon
- Two felony counts of assault in the first degree
- Two felony counts of criminal attempt first degree murder
- One felony count of vehicular eluding
- One felony count of possession of a weapon by a previous offender
Dunham was booked into the Boulder County Jail. According to court records, he had open warrants in Boulder and Weld counties from charges this year and last year.
The multijurisdictional Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to investigate because officers fired their weapons. The Boulder Police Department is the lead investigating agency for the crime spree.
Table Mesa Drive reopened in both directions shortly after 2:30 p.m., but the ramp from eastbound Table Mesa to U.S. 36 remains closed. Boulder police said they anticipated the ramp would be open by 4 p.m.
Several bus routes are also impacted. RTD will provide updates on the alert page on their website.
