JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo — Researchers can now apply for small grants from JeffCo Open Space to study aspects of the land.

Applications are available for Jeffco Open Space’s Small Research Grants Program, which allows individuals and groups to conduct studies on the land. In return, with the results from the researchers, JeffCo Open Space staff will gain insight on how to better manage the land.

What does the research have to involve? As long as it has significant to resource management or visitor experience issues, it will be considered. Applicants can propose an alterative topic of their own interest or choose one suggested by JeffCo Open Space.

One of the past grant recipients was Adaptation Environmental Services, which conducted a study titled “Prairie Rattlesnake Movements in an Urban Landscape and Assessing Visitor Perception” in North Table Mountain Park during the summer months of 2017. The study used radio-telemetry to track rattlesnakes to determine their habitat usage and assessed visitor knowledge and perception toward the animals.

Both individuals and groups are welcome to apply. Awards are typically between $1,000 and $5,000, though some special cases may be awarded more. All research must be completed within the same year, unless it is approved otherwise, and some multi-year projects will be considered. The projects must take place on JeffCo Open Space property and researchers are required to share their findings in a scientific report.

To apply, contact Hillary King by Dec. 7 by calling 303-271-5924 or emailing hking@jeffco.us. Proposals are due Jan. 11, 2019.
