DENVER -- One suspect is dead and three officers were injured Wednesday as police attempted to arrest a man on several outstanding warrants.

Officers responded to the 2600 block of West Bates around noon Wednesday. It's unclear what led them to the home. When police arrived at the house, the man escaped through a window in the back of the home.

Police followed the man, which led to an altercation in the middle of the road. The suspect reached for one of the responding officer's guns, leading police to shoot the man after a brief struggle.

Denver Police Chief Robert White arrived at the scene less than an hour after the shooting.

"The officers arrived on the scene and the residents of that particular house let the officers in and stated that the individual that they were looking for was in the rear of the house," said Chief White.

A woman who lived at the house said the suspect is her best friend's son.

"I've known him his whole life and it's going to be hard not to have him around and I hope that the officers that were harmed are going to be OK," said Bobbie Grosch.

None of the officers were shot but they were injured during the struggle. Chief White called all of their injuries "minor."

This is the second fatal officer-involved shooting in less than a week. Police shot a man near Dailey Park during a similar attempted arrest.

Denver Police have been involved in ten officer-involved shootings in 2016.
