SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky officials say remains found in a wooded area of Shelby County last year have been identified as those of a missing Colorado man.

News outlets report Shelby County Sheriff's Det. Mark Moore announced on Thursday that that remains were identified as 29-year-old Timothy J. Stites of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Moore said Stites' family reported him missing in 2016.

The bones were found in February 2017 when a man called the sheriff to report his dog brought a human skull into his driveway. Investigating deputies then found more bones in a nearby wooded area.

Moore said Stites traveled for work and the last time he spoke to family he was in Louisville.

Authorities say they are now trying to determine how Stites died.
