PUEBLO, Colo. — A puppy purchased off Craigslist in Pueblo has tested positive for rabies, health officials announced Wednesday.
According to the Pueblo Department of Public Health & Environment, the dog died as a result of the infection.
The red min-pinscher mix was picked up in Penrose on April 12 after it was listed online, but it’s not known how the dog became infected.
County health officials are investigating to determine its previous owner to prevent the virus from infecting people. Rabies is 99.9% fatal.
Rabies infection in dogs is rare in Colorado. There have been only a few cases in the last decade. The bite of an infected animal spreads the virus.
If you have information about the puppy or person, who sold the puppy immediately contact the Pueblo Department of Public Health & Environment 719-583-4307.
