Public invited to weigh in on search for DPS superintendent

Six community meetings scheduled for September

DENVER — With just over a month until Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg steps down, the Denver Board of Education is ramping up its search for a replacement.

On Tuesday the board will host the first of several community meetings, to give the public a chance to voice their thoughts and concerns. The first meeting will be held at Abraham Lincoln High School in southwest Denver.

The board has laid out some key questions for the community:

  1. What are your thoughts regarding the current state of DPS and its direction?
  2. What are your hopes for the future of DPS?
  3. What are the characteristics you'd like to see in the next superintendent?

Superintendent Boasberg has been leading the district since January of 2009. His advice for his successor is to invest in people.

"There's nothing more important to our schools than the quality of our teachers, the quality of our school leaders," he said on the first day of school.

He said that investment will help the teachers learn, grow and develop the necessary, yet complex, skills to lead a school.

The regional community meetings will be taking place at the following locations. All meetings begin at 5:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Abraham Lincoln High School
  • Wednesday, Sept. 5 at John F. Kennedy High School
  • Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Denver School of the Arts
  • Wednesday, Sept. 12 at George Washington High School
  • Thursday, Sept. 13 at Thomas Jefferson High School
  • Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Evie Dennis Campus

More meetings are planned for the Green Valley Ranch and Montbello neighborhoods. Those dates and locations will be posted on the DPS superintendent search website. Community members can also email their thoughts to supersearch@dpsk12.org.
