ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Prosecutors are charging two Englewood brothers with 12 counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child and one count of being a Habitual Sex Offender against Children.
The suspects, 65-year old Daniel Alberts, and 61-year old Timothy Alberts, appeared in court Thursday. Both are being held on $50,000 bond.
Court documents state that police went to the Alberts home near South Washington Street and Mansfield Avenue on Saturday, after receiving a report about a woman yelling for help.
Once officers arrived, they noticed "an unbearable odor" coming from inside the house and saw the suspect's 91-year old father watching T.V., while covered with a blanket.
They say their were rats, mice and maggots in the house.
Porn, children underwear found in brothers' rooms
After getting permission from the brothers to check the rest of the house, police found a pair of boy's underwear displayed on a wall in Daniel's bedroom.
They found several other children's undergarments on the floor.
Officers also found underwear containing Disney characters in Timothy's bedroom.
According to the arrest affidavit, Timothy Alberts told police that he and his brother are both pedophiles, and that he liked children 1- to 8-years-old, and that Daniel liked children 8- to 13-years-old.
Police removed computers, CDs and tapes believed to contain pornographic images of children.
Neighbor Reaction
"People are just sick," said Leticia Bronte, a former resident who still does volunteer ministry work in the neighborhood.
Bronte told Denver7 that when she sees a lot of junk outside a house, she can't help but wonder what's going on inside.
The City of Englewood was certainly concerned about that too.
The Building Department condemned the Alberts house because of conditions inside.
When asked about the suspect's elderly father, police said he is being cared for by protective services.
One neighbor, who declined to give her name, said the Alberts brothers were strange, especially Timothy.
She said she tried to avoid him.
"He came up to me (one time) in a diaper," she said. "My boyfriend was standing by the window and said, 'was he really wearing a diaper? I was like, 'Yeah.'"
"He gave a lot of my friends the weebie jeebies," she said.
The neighbor added, "What's really sad, is that they didn't have to register."
She was referring to the brothers' previous arrests for child sex assault, dating back to the late 70s and early 80s.
"No one told us about them," she said. "We had to learn about it from other neighbors."
The previous arrests/convictions predated Colorado's Sex Offender Registry requirements.
According to state statutes, only people convicted on, or after July 1, 1991, of an unlawful sexual offense, as defined in 18-3-411 C.R.S., is required to register in Colorado.
