DENVER – Officials are now investigating a Colorado wildfire that began as a prescribed burn but got out of control in Larimer County last month.

The Elk Fire burned about 150 unplanned acres near Red Feather Lakes, northwest of Fort Collins. It was reported out of hand on Oct. 16.

The Colorado Department of Public Safety's compliance and professional standards office is reviewing the fire, according to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. State law requires an investigation into any prescribed burn that gets out of control.
