DENVER – A popular Five Points bagel shop is back in business after a fire forced its closure in early May.
Rosenberg’s Bagels and Delicatessen opened its doors at 725 East 26TH Avenue at 6 a.m. Saturday.
A fire burned through the apartment above the business on May 2. The blaze damaged much of the shop’s kitchen.
Police say the fire was set to cover up the shooting death of Shane Richardson, who lived above Rosenberg's. Denver Police made an arrest in connection to the crime.
The suspect, 30-year-old Brian Scott Pattison, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree arson and multiple counts of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
Denver7’s Amanda del Castillo spoke with customers at Sunday’s reopening.
“We went to bed, set our alarm to come out here this morning and see how big the line was,” said Five Points resident Kelly Mathewson, pointing to the line that went outside of the shop’s backdoor.
Mathewson has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years. She said she’s watched the transitioning neighborhood from her front door.
“This neighborhood has gone through a lot of changes, but there are still some rough pockets, and it was sad.,” she said.
Harlo Hoffer, a Rosenberg's regular, said the May fire wouldn't keep her from returning.
“There is no concern. This is a very safe neighborhood. Lots of great areas,” said Hoffer.
Rosenberg's workers wore the mythical phoenix on their backs. They told Denver7 that like the phoenix, the bagel shop rose from its own ashes.
