DENVER – Police are working to find out who was responsible for shooting and killing a man, likely in Denver, and dumping his body near Interstate 25 in Erie.

Denver police said Thursday that Erie officers had found a man’s body covered in bags Sunday morning off the I-25 Frontage Road near Erie Parkway. They found the man had been shot and killed and also that he had not been killed there.

Erie police discovered that the man was “likely” killed in the 5200 block of Steele Street in Denver, DPD said Thursday, and that his body was taken to Erie and dumped.

The Weld County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 39-year-old Gene David Cisneros.

Erie police and Denver police started working together and DPD has since taken over the lead on the investigation. DPD officials said Thursday that investigators were interviewing witnesses and following leads to try and find out what led to Cisneros’ death and who killed him.

Police are asking anyone with information to call DPD at 720-913-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP.
