HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Police surrounded a Highlands Ranch home after a shooting on Castle Ridge Circle Tuesday afternoon, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet.
Around 3 p.m., a male suspect approached the male homeowner in the 9800 block of Castle Ridge Circle, and multiple shots were fired, the tweet read. It’s not clear if the victim was hit.
After the shooting, the victim fled the scene on foot and the suspect reportedly went inside the victim’s home where authorities believed he remained for several hours.
The police operation displaced some nearby residents and forced officials to place an elementary school on lockout.
The scene was cleared around 6 p.m., and the lockout was lifted. The sheriff's office said Wednesday that the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Ryan Lane, was found dead inside the home. The sheriff's office said deputies "never had contact w/ suspect" in a tweet. Lane's manner and cause of death will be determined by the county coroner's office.
The sheriff’s office said the people involved in the incident know each other.
