Drivers take off after deadly I-25 collision

Posted

Denver Police are searching for three drivers connected to a deadly hit and run along I-25 South near Alameda.

The crash happened at around 4:30 Wednesday morning. Michael Martinez, 61, died on scene.

Police say only one witness stayed behind to give them information. He told them he and a driver in a semi-truck were both headed southbound on I-25 behind a man on a motorcycle.

He passed the motorcycle and through his rear-view mirror saw the motorcyclist thrown off his bike. He told police he’s unsure how that happened.

The man then saw two other vehicles run over the driver, whose body was on the road.

All three vehicles kept driving. The witness told police two other cars stopped, however, both drivers took off before police arrived.

“We know there was more than one witness to this collision,” said Sgt. Mike Farr. “We’re asking you to call us and tell us what you saw."

Police released Martinez's name on Thursday. His cause of death was determined to be from multiple blunt force traumas.

“Help me provide some closure to the family,” said Farr.

He says they’re looking for drivers in three vehicles:

  • A semi-truck with a white cab and red lettering, with something similar to a hopper trailer attached
  • A sedan
  • And a box or delivery truck

They’re also asking for witnesses to contact Denver Police.

Police aren't sure whether the driver of the semi truck realized he had either hit the motorcyclist or that the motorcyclist had fallen off his bike.

They are pretty certain, however, that the other two drivers knew they'd hit something.

"Being a driver myself," said Farr, "having run over smaller objects in the roadway I'm aware of it."
