BOULDER, Colo. – A man is dead after a brief SWAT standoff involving a stolen vehicle Monday morning in Boulder, police say.

A Boulder police officer stopped a vehicle with a stolen license plate just before 5:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Moorheard Ave., Boulder police spokesperson Shannon Aulabaugh said.

After the car stopped, the officer reported hearing a gunshot and called for backup. An emergency alert went out to nearly 230 nearby homes telling residents to shelter in place.

The Boulder Police SWAT team arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later and found the suspect dead. Aulabaugh said no officers fired their weapon but said the investigation was ongoing.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will determine the man’s cause and manner of death and release his identity.
