WESTMINSTER, Colo. – Police fatally shot a robbery suspect who had fled a crash in Westminster on Friday night, officials said.

The incident unfolded after 8 p.m. near 92nd Avenue and Federal Boulevard. A man who was suspected of robbing a store at knifepoint in nearby Federal Heights had driven off when a police officer tried to pull him over, according to a news release from police. Other similar armed robberies were reported at auto stores in the area on Friday night.

The man crashed at the intersection 92nd and Federal and ran from the accident. Several Thornton and Westminster officers were in the area and chased the suspect until he jumped a fence. The man was then confronted by officers as he climbed another fence, into a nearby condo complex.

An officer fired his Taser toward the man several times before several officers fired their guns, fatally striking him, the news release said. The man had a handgun, police said, but it was unclear if he fired any shots.

Two Westminster officers, one Thornton officer and one Federal Heights officer fired their weapons.

In the crash before the shooting, a man and woman were injured and taken to a hospital, but their conditions were unknown Saturday morning.

The suspect's identity has not been released. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigation team is investigating the shooting.
