DENVER – Commerce City police said Friday they believe the 3-year-old who died in a shooting Thursday may have been the result of him and his two brothers mishandling a loaded gun.
Police said their preliminary investigation found the young boy was with his two brothers, who are 12 and 13, with no adults around, at the time the shooting happened.
“The Commerce City Police Department urges adults to keep weapons in a secure and safe place,” police department spokesperson Charlie Schoepflin said in a statement.
Officers responded to the home in the 7800 block of Jasmine Drive Thursday afternoon just after 3 p.m. on a report of a gunshot and found the 3-year-old dead with a gunshot wound.
The department said the investigation into what caused the shooting is ongoing.
