WESTMINSTER, Colo. – A 4-year-old preschool student was taken to the hospital after being hit by a van near Skyline Vista Elementary School in Westminster Wednesday morning.

Police said the boy was with family members crossing the street in a crosswalk at 74th and Zuni when he was hit by a minivan and dragged for a short distance shortly after 8 a.m.

An officer on the scene said a passerby used a jack to lift the van and free the child.

Aldo Ocegueda told Denver7 he was driving his child to school when he saw what had happened. He turned around to get a jack from his house. He and his brother drove back to the scene and used the jack to lift the van and free the little boy.

"He was facing up. I think it was his backpack that wouldn't let him move," Ocegueda said. "He seemed hurt in the head."

School principal Zach White was notified by a janitor what had happened.

"All the students are like my kids. That's what I thought," White said. "The two people who had the jack were the heroes of the day."

The boy was taken to the hospital with injuries that police said did not appear to be critical. He is expected to survive.

The driver remained at the scene and will be cited for careless driving and failing to yield.
