Plane diverted to DIA due to severe turbulence; 5 passengers evaluated

DENVER – Several people were taken to a local hospital for evaluation after the flight they were on was diverted to Denver because of severe turbulence.

A spokesman for American Airlines said flight 1296 was headed to Chicago from San Diego when it encountered turbulence over the Rocky Mountains.

The Boeing 737 changed course and landed at Denver International Airport, where it was met by medical personnel around 5:30 p.m. An airport spokesperson said a total of five people were being checked out for injuries. Two were taken to the hospital and three were being evaluated at the airport.

The plane had 148 passengers and six crew members on board.
