EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – One person died in a small plane crash Wednesday morning southeast of Falcon, authorities said.

The crash happened in the 6000 block of McCandlish Road southeast of Falcon just after 11:30 a.m., according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. The plane crashed about 2 miles south of the Meadow Lake Airport.

A witness told dispatch that the plane appeared to be trying to land when it flipped over and crashed. Sheriff’s deputies and the Falcon Fire Department responded and found the pilot dead inside. They were the only person inside the plane.

The sheriff’s office said the plane caught fire and was extinguished by Falcon firefighters.

The plane was registered to a man who lives in Colorado Springs, according to our partners at KOAA in Colorado Springs.

The pilot has not been identified. McCandlish Road south of Falcon Highway was closed for the investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
