DENVER -- After being released from the hospital following an accidental hit on the sidelines, Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips is back to work and making light of the situation.
Phillips, who is known as Son of Bum on Twitter, took to the platform to say he gets "the big hit award of the week."
Indeed, the hit leveled the 69-year-old. San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon collided with the coordinator as he watched his defense return an interception for a touchdown.
Phillips wouldn't get to see the touchdown celebration -- athletic trainers and medics surrounded him, placing him on a backboard before rushing him off the field to a local hospital.
As Phillips left the field, he was able to wave his index finger at fans, signifying he had movement in his limbs. Hours later, fans learned he underwent evaluation and appeared to be ready to return to work after an evening of rest.
"Thanks and I appreciate everyone's concern -I am ok today and back to work at what I love," Phillips said Tuesday on Twitter.
While he made light of the situation, he also had a real comment about how the player collided with him.
"They say it was a collision on the sideline but actually I got run over," Phillips said.
It appeared after review that Gordon didn't make much effort to avoid the veteran NFL coach, even pushing out his arms, rather than attempting to help Phillips stay on his feet.
It's not yet known if further action will be taken on behalf of the Chargers, or the league, but the Broncos are just happy to keep their coach on the sidelines.
