DENVER -- Police were investigating a fatal shooting at the Airway Motel on East Colfax Avenue.

A woman, identified by family members as Quinasia Russell, 23, was shot and killed early Saturday morning.

Officers heard shots fired in the area around 2:45 a.m. They discovered Russell wounded in a room at the motel which is located on East Colfax Avenue at Verbena Street.

Shirley Nelson told Denver7's Amanda del Castillo she was Russell's paternal grandmother.

Nelson said her granddaughter was loved by many, pointing to the group of people who spent their Saturday morning outside of the crime scene.

Family members said they are worried about the possible retaliation that may follow Russell's shooting death.

"If you go on and do the right thing, it'll just make it better for that person," pleaded Nelson.

"Listen and pay attention because the way that you're going, everyone is either going to end up in prison or in a grave," added Nelson.

Late Saturday night police named Brent M. Kelley as a suspect in the Russell's death. A first degree murder warrant was issued for his arrest.

Anyone with information on this investigation or the location of Kelley is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 720-913-7867 (STOP) or sending a text message to: 274637 (Crimes). Enter the title DMCS followed by your message.
