DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — Two occupants of a vehicle were killed following a collision with a freight train in Douglas County Tuesday.

South Metro Fire tweeted around 1 p.m. that crews were on scene of a train-vehicle crash in the 8500 block of U.S. Highway 85. The collision happened around 12:48 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff deputies say the two victims were confirmed deceased shortly after authorities arrived on scene.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are not yet known. Investigators are still looking into why the car was on the track. They don’t know if the vehicle was stalled or if the driver tried to beat the train.

No other injuries were reported.

The train involved is operated by BNSF Railway.

The line runs along US 85, crossing several roads and business access points, most of which lack crossing arms.
