ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. – A man jaywalking on Federal Blvd. Thursday evening was struck and killed by an Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was responding to a call for service, according to a news release obtained by Denver7 late Thursday night.

The deputy was driving southbound on Federal Blvd. at around 7:45 p.m. in the left lane and had just passed W. 56th Ave. when he collided with a man who was crossing the middle of the street from west to east, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The pedestrian was struck by the front of the patrol car and came to rest in the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office.

In the statement, the sheriff’s office said they tried to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said that while the patrol car’s emergency lights and siren were not on at the time of the crash, the car’s headlights were.

They also said speeding was not being considered as a factor in the crash at this time.

The deputy suffered no injuries.

Both directions of Federal Blvd. were shut down between 55th and 56th Avenues and were expected to remain closed for several hours.
