PARKER, Colo. — Neighbors reached out to Denver7 concerned about safety at a Parker intersection, and now the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is promising change.

The latest accident at the Stonegate Parkway intersection near Crestview Drive was a hit and run that left a child with serious injuries.

Not long after, police arrested Kimberley Miller, 49, and charged her with multiple crimes.

As deputies continue to investigate, the sheriff's office says it plans to conduct a traffic study on Stonegate Parkway.

"We'll take a look at [the intersection], and we'll make a difference on it," Steve Johnson, chief deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. "Looking at it moving forward, we are going to do a traffic study there, and we are going to monitor the speeds ... throughout the area."

In the past three years, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said there have been five accidents in the area near the intersection where the hit and run happened.

Johnson called it unfortunate that drivers need reminding, but said they're also going to step up traffic enforcement to and remind drivers that kids are soon heading back to school.

"If you're concerned, trust us — we're going to get in and we are going to take a look at it and we are going to do what we can to get traffic to slow down there," Johnson said.

Alison Love, the boy’s mother, said he is still recovering after suffering a cracked skull in the crash.

“I mean, he’s doing remarkably well considering the injuries he sustained,” Love said. “He’s alive. He’s walking and talking.”

She says there has been an increase in traffic over the years, and that people often use the street as a cut-through.

So she said she’s encouraged by the sheriff’s office’s decision to undertake a traffic study.

“If that could prevent this happening to another child, let alone just another person, absolutely,” she said. “That would mean a lot.”

As police begin their study, classmates, friends and family continue to gather to support the 12-year-old Colton Love.

They gathered to hold a bake sale at the Stonegate Community Center on Wednesday and continue to drum up support on GoFundMe.
