Park County deputy killed was HS coach

The Park County Sheriff's Office deputy shot and killed Wednesday was Nate Carrigan.

Carrigan was a Corporal and had served with the Park County Sheriff's Office for 13 years.

Carrigan and two other deputies were serving an eviction notice when the homeowner opened fire, killing Carrigan, officials said. The two other deputies were able to return fire and killed the suspect, Martin Wirth.

The two deputies were also hit by gunfire.

Master Patrol Deputy Kolby Martin was shot multiple times in the lower extremities. He is in serious condition.

Captain Mark Hancock was grazed in the ear. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Carrigan was well known in the community. There he was known as Coach Carrigan. He coached football and baseball at Platte Canyon High School.

Carrigan went to Platte Canyon High School himself. He was a wrestler when he was in school.

Sheriff Fred Wegener said Carrigan worked tirelessly and "meant a lot to our community."

"Nate was a caring individual who went above and beyond," Wegener said.

Carrigan was leaves behind a fiance, four step-children and several family members in Park County.

Instead of flowers, the family is asking for donations to a scholarship fund at the Bank of the West set up in Nate Carrigan's name.
