ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. -- A car full of teenagers crashed at the Ghost Bridge nearly 20 years before five people were killed in a fiery crash after leaving the haunted bridge on Sunday.
The latest accident happened Sunday morning on County Line Road near the Elbert-Arapahoe County line.
Friends of the victims said the five were on their way back from the bridge when the crash happened.
The Ghost Bridge or Third Bridge, as it's known today, is a haunted area where according to legend there was a native American massacre. It is located 14 miles east of Aurora on County Line Road near Kiowa Creek.
"That bridge is supposed to haunted out there," said Erin Searle, who lives down the road from where the latest accident happened.
This isn't the first time teens have crashed during a visit to the Ghost Bridge.
In the summer of 1997, a car full of teenagers lost control and went into a creek at the bridge.
Two girls died and several others were injured. Some believe their ghosts still haunt the bridge to this day.
Colorado State Patrol troopers said the car in Sunday's crash was traveling at a high rate of speed before it rolled several times and caught fire.
"The problem with the road is it does have hills," said Trooper Nate Reid with Colorado State Patrol. “It’s fine, if you’re going 45 or 50 miles per hour, whatever the posted speed limit is for the road, but when you add excessive speed and it has hills like that ultimately something like this is going to happen.”
The rural stretch of road is known for its rolling hills, and neighbors said it can be dangerous.
"Just trying to whip down that road to get that feel you can get going up and down hills," said Searle.
While both accidents happened in different locations, they do have one thing in common: all of the cars were speeding.
"If you're in that crop of people and you're not the driver, make sure the driver's going to drive you safely," said Reid.
