Ordinance makes second Monday in October 'Indigenous Peoples' Day' in Denver

DENVER – The Mile High City is latest city across the nation that will now honor the second Monday in October as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”

The Denver City Council approved the ordinance at Monday’s meeting. Last year, the city proclaimed the second Monday as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” though it had never formally recognized the day, referred to as Columbus Day in many parts of the country, ever before.

The state and city have planned events leading up to this year’s official day, Oct. 10.

“Far too often the contributions of indigenous peoples’ go unrecognized in our history and textbooks, misrepresenting how much of the United States was settled, including Denver,” Councilman Paul Lopez, who introduced the ordnance, said in a news release.
