BOULDER Colo. -- It's always fire season in Colorado.
Fire officials are warning homeowners to conduct wildfire mitigation around their property. Even if you live in an urban area, wildfires can still happen.
"Anywhere you got that park-like structure or have homes and yards with lots of junipers, oak plants that are extremely flammable, all of us would benefit from mitigation from our homes, especially with the Fourth of July coming up," said Einar Jensen, a risk reduction specialist with South Metro Fire Rescue.
Denver7 tagged along with Wildfire Partners. The organization helps residents to mitigate their homes. More than a thousand homeowners joined the partnership since it started in 2014.
"We look at the landscape, out at least to a hundred feet, if that's on the homeowner’s property," said wildfire mitigation specialist Abby Silver.
They look at everything from the roof to the foundation.
Jensen said she just moved to the mountains.
"When we bought this house, the first thing we thought about was fire mitigation," said Erna.
Trees and bushes need to be at least 30 feet away from the home. Logs used for fire places should be stacked 30 feet away, too.
If you have a deck, it's best not to put any vegetation underneath.
After the wildfire mitigation specialist makes a report, it's then given to the homeowner for them to decide to make the recommended changes.
"At least you have done what you can do," Erna said. "I mean, you can't prevent it. At least for your own feelings, you've done what you can hopefully be lucky."
