DENVER – Charges were filed Wednesday against a man accused in the apparent random murder of a 77-year-old vet.
Pete Martinez, 41, was charged with one count of first-degree murder after deliberation in the stabbing death of Lester Easterday.
Easterday was found in his car Nov. 22. In Cheesman Park. He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, but he didn't survive.
Easterday's granddaughter turned to Craigslist to help find his killer.
"He was 77 yrs old, a vet," the woman wrote. "I can't sleep. I'm in shock."
Martinez was linked to the scene through DNA evidence and arrested Dec. 3.
Prosecutors say they do not know why Martinez allegedly stabbed the grandfather to death.
Martinez remains in custody in the Denver Detention Center where he is being held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in Denver District Court on Jan. 5 for a preliminary hearing.
