LONGMONT, Colo. – Handlers for Longmont’s K-9 Unit have started a nonprofit organization to help raise funds to pay for equipment and protection for the police department’s hard-working dogs.
Since funds for equipment for the dogs -- including vests, food, training and kennels – currently comes out of the police department’s patrol budget, the new nonprofit will help make up the difference in tight budget years.
The department had been receiving some money for equipment from a Washington nonprofit, Keeping K-9s in Kevlar.
According to the Longmont Times-Call, the Longmont Police K-9 Association hopes to raise funds throughout the year at local events.
More information on the organization can be found on their Facebook page.
