GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – An inmate who is facing a murder charge tried to escape a Grand Junction jail through the ceiling before deputies caught him Saturday morning, authorities said.

Malcolm Martin, 25, was being held at the Mesa County Detention Center on several charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder assault and child abuse, according to jail records.

At about 9 a.m. Saturday, Martin climbed into a crawl space above the ceiling tiles and moved to a different area of the jail, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies and other staff then heard Martin in the ceiling before he could escape the building. The deputies helped Martin down and took him back into custody.

The sheriff's office was working to assess the damage to the ceiling, and Martin will face additional charges over the incident.
