Approximately 500 flights canceled at DIA

Approximately 500 flights were canceled Tuesday at Denver International Airport due to snowy conditions, stranding many passengers trying to get in and out of Colorado. 

As of 7 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration estimates people are waiting around 3.5 hours to catch a flight, a slight improvement from earlier this afternoon.

A new snowfall record was set at DIA on Dec. 15 with about 7 inches of powder, with more expected at nightfall. That, on top of gusty winds reduced visibility significantly.

Denver7's Mark Boyle went to the airport, where boards were covered with "canceled" and "delayed."

He noticed snowpacked roads leading up to DIA. "Pena Blvd. [is] open but [expect] winter driving conditions," airport officials said on Twitter.

Snow removal crews will work through the duration of the snow.
