Woman who had baby cut from womb has compassion

Posted

A Colorado woman whose unborn baby was cut from her womb says she feels compassion for the woman facing charges in the case and says she hasn't lost faith in humanity.

Michelle Wilkins said in an interview on the "Dr. Phil" show that she lost consciousness after she was stabbed and slashed.

"I started walking towards the door. I was at the door and ready to walk outside and she says, 'Oh, I have some girl clothes, downstairs, that somebody gave me. I found out I was having a boy. Do you want them?' And intuitively I have that sensation wash over me, 'I have everything I need,' but for fear of being impolite, I decided to stay," Wilkins said of the moments before she was attacked. "I think about that moment a lot."

She said she was unaware of the loss of her baby until the next day at the hospital, when her boyfriend told her that the baby was dead.

"I woke up and I had all these tubes down my throat. And at first, I just tried to maintain a calm disposition," she said. "The understanding hit me. I started panicking." She said she asked her boyfriend if her baby was alive with her eyes, and he didn't even have to say it.

Dynel Lane is charged with attempted murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy and multiple counts of felony assault. Prosecutors say she attacked Wilkins and removed the unborn baby girl from her womb March 18.

It was widely reported that Wilkins said, "I love you" right after the attack to the suspect; she says this wasn't just a survival tactic.

"It's also part of my core belief as a human being that that is what really motivates us and that's what connects us to all other beings," she said. "And in turn, she stabbed me and said, 'If you love me you'll let me do this.'"

Lane remains jailed in Boulder County on $2 million bail. Her trial is expected in February.
