DENVER – Good morning, everyone! Here’s what you need to know today on Friday, September 8.

1. Mexico hit by deadly earthquake
At least 15 people are dead following an 8.1-magnitude earthquake, CNN reports. Mexico's president said the quake was the country's strongest in a century.

2. Irma looms as mythical ‘big one’
The mythic, long-dreaded hurricane that threatens the densely populated southeast coast has long haunted Floridians. Irma, it appears, could be it. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has activated 7,000 guard members for Friday.

3. Mountain coaster in Steamboat Springs opens
The longest coaster in North America is opening in Steamboat Springs Friday. At more than 6,280 linear feet, the track near Christie Peak Express descends more than 400 vertical feet, rises 40 feet above the ground, and features dips, waves, turns and 360-degree circles.

4. Sen. Cory Gardner holds town hall
Republican Sen. Cory Gardner will hold a town hall meeting on the Western Slope Friday. The meeting will be held on the Colorado Mesa University campus in Grand Junction. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.

5. Warm weekend ahead
We'll see upper 80s and even a few low 90s through the weekend. There will be a better chance of storms each afternoon through the weekend.
