DENVER — A major highway project south of the Denver metro area is about to get underway.

Beginning in September, construction will begin on the 18-mile I-25 South Gap project that will add an express lane in each direction south of Castle Rock to Monument.

The $350 million project will also widen shoulders, repair or replace aging bridges, improve drainage, pavement and truck access and add new wildlife crossings.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has selected Kraemer North America as the construction manager/general contractor of the project.

The Gap is the only four-lane section of I-25 connecting Colorado's two largest cities: Denver and Colorado Springs. Over the years, congestion, crashes and delays have increased due to population growth and more people using the road.

Most of the corridor will experience active construction by summer 2019. Substantial completion is planned for 2022.
