House panel endorses organic labels for marijuan

Posted

A Colorado House committee has endorsed a bill to create a state program to certify marijuana as organic.

The Public Health Care and Human Services committee sent the bill to the finance committee on Friday.

Colorado could become the first state to regulate organic labels in its pot industry.

Organic standards are regulated federally, and because the U.S. government considers pot illegal, there's nothing to stop marijuana growers from calling their goods organic.

The city of Denver has seized thousands of marijuana plants from growers suspected of using off-limits chemicals on their plants. Some of those plants were sold with names suggesting the products were natural or organic.

The House bill directs the state agricultural department to get a third party to draft certification regulations.
