Brew fests for pot lovers could be coming soon

Posted

A brew fest for pot lovers may be coming to a neighborhood near you.

This week, Colorado lawmakers will consider a proposed bill that would allow for street fair-type marijuana events. Under the proposed legislation, fair-goers won't be allowed to smoke at these festivals, but they could buy pot.

Just like Oktoberfest, for example, the street would be blocked off and entry would require a wristband.

Adam Segalis at LoDo Wellness in downtown Denver sees the proposal as the next step in the evolution of legalized marijuana.

"After two years of (legal) recreational sales, I feel like people are a little bit more comfortable coming into our shop," Segalis said.

That comfortability is now leading to new, innovative ways to promote and market legal marijuana in Colorado.

Just like Colorado's dozens of brew fests, jamborees and parties every summer -- the marijuana industry now wants its turn.

"Let’s get people outside and associate the fun part of summer with our business," said Segalis.

House Bill 16-1092 allows for special event permits, where marijuana can be sold, but not smoked. The street must be closed off, with an entrance for those 21 and older. And the festival must provide its own security.

“It gives everybody an opportunity to kind of see what everybody has to offer," Segalis said. “Even the same strand would be different from store to store."

The bill comes up for the first time on Tuesday.
