EDGEWATER, Colo. -- What began as a dream 20 years ago, has finally come to fruition, thanks in part to tax revenue from marijuana sales.

Edgewater Mayor Laura Keegan unveiled the city's new $12 - 15 million civic center on Sunday, with a time-honored ribbon cutting.

"This facility is home for our new Jefferson County Public Library," she said, "our police department, the recreation and fitness center and city offices."

Police Department

Keegan said the police department had been housed in a building that was formally a grocery store.

It was a home the department outgrew long ago.

The evidence room was about the size of a walk-in closet.  It was so small that evidence was oftentimes stored off site.

Keegan said the new civic center is a hub where families can spend time together.

That's exactly what Edgewater resident Adriana Ruiz plans to do, now that a new library has been set up on the first floor.

"It's amazing," she said. "I'm like blown away."

Ruiz told Denver7 that her 16-year old daughter, Irma, got a job at the library.

"My kids grew up at the old Edgewater library," she said. "That's why I am so excited."

"I just hope people take advantage of this place, and take care of it, because it feels like home to me."
