UPDATE (Saturday, May 11): Police say Simmons was located and taken into custody in Weld County Saturday morning.
GOLDEN, Colo. – Police are searching for a man accused of breaking into a home in Golden on Thursday night, trying to rob the residents as he grabbed a butcher knife and held a baseball bat and hitting a resident in the head with the bat.
Drevon Simmons, 24, faces charges of attempted robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, felony menacing and first-degree criminal trespass, according to a news release from Golden police.
The alleged break-in happened shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 800 block of 9th Street. Police had been in contact with Simmons multiple times earlier Thursday because of his "bizarre behavior" in downtown Golden, but he wasn't arrested, the news release said.
"Although he was acting strangely, he did not exhibit any criminal behavior" earlier in the day, police said.
In the break-in, the victims told police that Simmons entered their house through an open side door and demanded money, the news release said.
Simmons took a butcher knife from the kitchen and had a small baseball bat in his other hand, police said. A man at the home was hit in the head, arm and wrist with the bat, police said. The female resident fled the home unharmed.
Simmons left the home and left the knife and some of his clothing behind, police said. He was seen running north in an alley behind the Coors Credit Union. A K-9 tracker led officers to 7th and Cheyenne streets, where they believe Simmons jumped a fence onto Highway 58. Police sent Code Red alerts to nearby residents, asking them to lock their doors and call police if they saw Simmons.
Police described Simmons as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall with mid-length dreadlocks and a broken front tooth. He was last seen wearing multiple layers of clothing, including a Yankees jersey and faded jeans. Anyone who sees Simmons should call 911 immediately, police said.
