AURORA, Colo. – An Aurora SWAT team surrounded a motel after a fatal shooting early Thursday morning. Police say the standoff was unrelated to the homicide investigation.
Around 1 a.m., police officers in Aurora responding to a shots fired call at the Riviera Motel found a man shot to death in the parking lot. The motel is located at 9100 East Colfax Avenue.
Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital, but he was pronounced deceased before they arrived. Police have yet to release details as to what may have led up to the shooting.
Investigators were going door-to-door trying to get witness information related to the shooting when they were tipped off that an armed robbery suspect was staying in one of the rooms.
A SWAT team was called in and an hours long standoff ensued. The unidentified armed robbery suspect was finally taken into custody around 7 a.m. He was taken out of the room in a stretcher. A woman hiding inside with the suspect was also taken into custody. Police said she had five outstanding warrants.
The standoff prompted police to close roads in the area and put nearby Boston Elementary on lockout. Roads were later reopened and traffic allowed back in. Boston Elementary was put on a delayed start. Classes are expected to start at 10 a.m.
Investigators have yet to release suspect information in connection to the fatal shooting. A large police presence remained at the motel for several hours. Aurora Police are expected to release more information later this afternoon.
