Man killed during police shooting in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man is dead after he was shot by Colorado Springs police Monday morning, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. in the 200 block of North Circle Drive when officers located a man who matched the description for a wanted murder suspect out of Ripley, Mississippi, the department said.

Police said the suspect pointed a handgun and fired at officers. Officers returned twice, discharging their weapons at least one time, according to the department.

The suspect took off and was contacted by other officers in the 400 block of North Circle Drive. Police said the suspect pointed his gun at officers when at least one officer shot at the suspect, hitting him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the suspect as 39-year-old James Gregory.

No officers were injured, according to the department. The four involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

The El Paso Sheriff's Office is investigating this incident.
