ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. – A man who was convicted in May of killing a young Aurora mother and shooting her boyfriend in the face in April 2018 was sentenced this month to life in prison plus 166 years.

Shaun R. Davis, 33, was convicted by an Arapahoe County jury in May of first-degree murder after deliberation, aggravated robbery, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

According to prosecutors, he shot 23-year-old Aliyah Bonicelli in the back of the head on April 8, 2018, killing her. He also shot her boyfriend in the face, but he survived.

Judge Andrew Baum said the case was “one of the most brutal homicides” he had seen.

“There was no need for Ms. Bonicelli to lose her life,” he said.

He found Davis – who had been out of prison for six months when the murder occurred – to be a habitual offender and handed down the sentence earlier this month.
