DENVER — A man was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing a transient man in a Denver alley on May 28.

The Denver District Attorney's Office said Allen Jeffrey Menendez, 47, was formally charged with first-degree murder on Thursday in connection to the case.

According to the district attorney’s office, a person called 911 to report that a person had been stabbed following an argument between two men in the alley behind 1545 S. Broadway in the afternoon of May 28.

When police arrived, they transported the injured man, who was later identified as 49-year-old Paul Leon Evans, to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, police determined that Evans and Menendez knew each other because they had both been camping in the alley, according to the district attorney's office.

Menendez was arrested on investigation of first-degree murder.

He was formally charged with the crime Thursday.
