LOUISVILLE, Colo – A couple in Louisville was hit with vandalism and are claiming the reason is because of their acceptance of immigrants.
Colleen Askew has a sign hanging on her porch that reads “No matter where you’re from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor.”
The sign is also in Spanish and Arabic.
However, the past several months, Askew had her sign stolen twice, and spray painted with the word ‘stop’ across the sign twice.
“It seems like things are escalating,” Askew said. “At first it was on our sidewalk and stolen. Then we nailed it to our porch and it’s been spray painted twice. It seems like someone is angry. More hostility, there’s more intolerance. Someone just doesn’t like it there.”
Askew reported all the incidents to the Louisville Police Department.
LPD told Denver7 the act is vandalism, however is not certain if it is a hate crime.
“I hope we can find out who did this and it will stop,” Askew said. “But since this has happened, more of our neighbors bought the sign and are hanging it up. We will continue to do that. This is bullying and I don’t want bullying to be accepted.”
