DENVER — Larimer Square is celebrating its 47th anniversary as Denver's first historic district on Thursday.

Volunteers will be distributing "I love Larimer Square" stickers and information on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The group opposes plans to redevelopment the historic site.

Larimer Square was Denver's first commercial block.

The National Trust has called Larimer Square a national model "for revitalizing neighborhoods through preservation."

However, the trust claims the ordinance that has protected the square is now under threat by "an inappropriate development proposal" that also calls for the "partial demolition of several buildings" and "the potential construction of two towers."

The owners of Larimer Square announced plans earlier this year to add two new towers on both sides of Larimer Street. Those plans are currently on hold while they evaluate their options, according to Colorado Preservation, Inc.
