LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A Lakewood police officer shot a man Monday morning near W. Florida Ave. and S. Harlan Street, who died after being taken to an area hospital.

The Lakewood Police Department tweeted just before 11:30 a.m. that an officer had been involved in a shooting in the 1500 block of S. Harlan Street and that all officers were uninjured. Video from the scene showed at least nine squad cars at the scene and several officers walking around homes, at least one of which was taped off with police tape.

Police tweeted that a weapon was recovered at the scene, and tweeted again minutes later that a man was shot and died after being transported to an area hospital.

Police told Denver7 just after 1 p.m. that they went to a home on Harlan around 11 a.m. after receiving information a man with several outstanding warrants was there. In a news release issued just before 2:30 p.m. Monday, spokesman Paul Osckel said that a 22-year-old man was in the home, and that the residents invited officers in. Police said that when officers went inside, the man climbed from a basement window into the backyard.

Osckel said an officer had been placed in the backyard in case the suspect ran from the home. Osckel said the man had a gun in his hand and that the man "refused several commands to drop the weapon." The officers then fired several shots at the suspect, though it's unclear how many times the unidentified man was hit.

A spokesperson said earlier in the day the suspect likely did not fire the weapon he was carrying. It's unclear if the man pointed the weapon at officers. The spokesperson said only one officer fired their weapon.

The name of the officer and the name of the suspect have not been released.

This is at least the 58th police shooting so far this year in Colorado.
