LOVELAND, Colo. — A kayaker went missing from a lake west of Loveland Sunday and authorities have not located him yet.
Shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Loveland Fire Rescue received a report of a missing kayaker at Buckingham Lake, said Battalion Chief Michael Cerovski.
While he said he’s not sure who the call came from, two people at the lake reported that they had seen a man in his mid-50s kayaking.
Authorities found an empty kayak floating on the lake.
Cerovski said the search was challenging and time-consuming because they don’t know where, or if, the man went into the water.
At 8:40 p.m., he said the team had been searching long enough that anybody in the water could not have survived. Loveland Fire Rescue switched its tactics from rescue to recovery mode, Cerovski said.
After nightfall, they pulled divers from the water and started using a boat equipped with sonar to search for the missing man. Meanwhile, authorities with a search dog walked the perimeter of the lake.
Cerovski said they hoped to get another dog that can pick up a scent from a boat out in the water.
The search was expected to continue into Monday.
