JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- A principal in charge of one of the top schools in Colorado is facing charges of domestic violence, putting his job in jeopardy.
Police in Jefferson County say they arrested Tony Edwards, the principal of D'Evelyn High School, Wednesday night for third-degree assault and domestic violence.
The Jefferson County School District said Tony Edwards is under an internal investigation and has been placed on paid administrative leave.
School officials released a letter to parents informing them of the arrest, calling the arrest "unrelated to his duties as a JeffCo Schools' employee."
"While we recognize this news may be disturbing for our community, it is important to honor Mr. Edwards' privacy during this time. Please be assured we will do whatever we can at D'Evelyn to help our students and staff process this information, and supports for students will be available as necessary," part of the letter read.
Other than assuring students and parents the alleged assault didn't involve a student or staff member, the school said it couldn't comment further.
U.S. News ranked D'Evelyn the fourth-best high school in Colorado in 2016 out of a review of more than 29,000 state schools.
