BOULDER, Colo. — An invasive species of beetle called the emerald ash borer has been found in another city outside Boulder.
The Daily Camera reports Boulder County foresters found a dead adult borer in a trap on public property in Superior, the sixth city in Colorado where it's been discovered.
A response team later found several ash trees showing symptoms of borer infestation on private property in the city.
The larvae of these insects feeds on the inner bark of ash trees and hinders the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
The Colorado State Forest Service says an ash tree infested with the beetle typically dies within two to four years.
The invasive beetle was first found in Boulder in 2013 and has since been discovered in the surrounding communities of Gunbarrel, Longmont, Lafayette and Lyons. The emerald ash borer has not yet been located outside of Boulder County in Colorado.
